The S1 Vision is Liebherr’s new haulage concept with a design that focuses on the core components necessary for moving material. It aims to enhance productivity, increase safety and reduce emissions.

\n\n

Comprising primarily a single axle and two tyres, the S1 Vision is designed to be scalable, offering a payload ranging from 220 kg up to 131 t. As such, the truck can be adapted for a wide range of applications, including earthmoving, farming and agriculture, construction and mining, among others.

\n\n

The S1 Vision is “electric, driverless, modular and self-balancing,” said Altan Enginalev, CEO of S1 Vision, speaking at the 2025 Liebherr international construction trade press tour, which was held in Telfs, Austria on 22-23 October.

\n\n

This new haulage concept was a collaborative effort between Liebherr Corporate Ventures AG, the group’s business unit for innovation and technology development, and Liebherr Mining Equipment Newport News Co, the group’s mining truck R&D and manufacturing facility.

\n\n

According to Liebherr, the technology has now become an important innovation beyond the mining division and could prove itself as pioneering for several product segments. The S1 Vision is “a single platform for many industries,” said Mr Enginalev. It can be used at various different jobsites, “from underground to open fields.”

\n\n

Excellent manoeuvrability

\n\n

To work effectively on a single axle, the S1 Vision is equipped with a self-levelling system that ensures maximum stability and safety, even on bumpy or rough terrain. This technology reduces the risk of tipping, providing smooth and secure operation across varying environments.

\n\n

The zero-turn radius means the truck can simply turn on the spot and travel all directions, making it ideal for applications in tight spaces that require precise movements and flexibility.

\n\n

The S1 Vision is powered by an electric drive, resulting in lower greenhouse gas emissions during operation. The advanced sensors help the truck navigate independently, avoid obstacles and efficiently manage traffic.

\n\n

If multiple S1 Vision trucks are operating in one location, the system enables them to connect and share real-time information, which optimises fleet operations, minimises congestion and enhances overall efficiency.

\n\n

With a compact structure, the truck can be transported and deployed on the jobsite easily, added Mr Enginalev. Its design also allows for rapid maintenance, with critical components easily accessible for quick servicing.

Komatsu has unveiled its new concept medium-sized hydraulic excavator that combines a hydrogen fuel cell and Komatsu-developed key components to achieve carbon neutrality at workplaces of construction equipment. By advancing the POC (proof of concept) tests it started in May 2023, Komatsu has accelerated its efforts to embark on the commercial production of medium-sized and large construction equipment powered by hydrogen fuel cells in the near future.

\n\n

In its mid-term management plan, Komatsu committed to minimising environmental impact throughout its business, targeting a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions from use of its products and production of its equipment by 2030 (compared to 2010 levels) and a challenge target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. To help its customers achieve carbon neutrality, Komatsu has been providing a variety of products, services and solutions that reduce environmental impact, such as hybrid hydraulic excavators and electric mini excavators. The company is also engaged in research and development to provide products equipped with new power sources.

\n\n

For this new concept machine, Komatsu has adopted a hydrogen fuel cell system and hydrogen tank produced by Toyota Motor Corporation. In addition to Komatsu’s comprehensive control technology, the combination of Toyota’s hydrogen fuel cell system and Komatsu key components, Komatsu is working towards zero exhaust emissions and a significant reduction in noise and vibration, while delivering the same powerful digging performance and high operability as engine-driven excavators.

\n\n

Komatsu explained that medium-sized and large construction equipment both require a power source with higher energy density than that of small construction equipment, which has led the move to electrification with batteries. Because hydrogen has a higher energy density and can be refuelled in a shorter time than is required for recharging batteries, Komatsu has been advancing its R&D efforts as a promising electrification choice for medium-sized and large models.

\n\n

To contribute to realising a hydrogen society and carbon neutrality, Komatsu will continue its efforts towards the commercial production of medium-sized and large construction machinery equipped with hydrogen fuel cells by conducting POC tests of this new concept machine.
